Dear Shah Rukh Khan… Have We Misunderstood You!?

Shah Rukh Khan, the King Khan or baadshah of Bollywood is one of the most popular actors India has ever produced having a global recognition. In the past 3 decades Shah Rukh has led many films that are synonym with his star power – Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G), Don and many more. Shah Rukh Khan is one actor whose fan following cuts across genders and age groups within and outside the country too.

SRK is not just an actor, he has expanded himself into businesses too with Red Chillies VFX, production and what not. He has produced quite a few films that he has not acted in. The question is, then what is it that is pushing SRK to the wall!! What is it that is making SRK so desperate to sell ‘deo’ and even a ‘pan masala’!! Ghosh! And if that was not all, be a part, in and as ‘donkey’!!! I’m sure we have misunderstood as much as you did.

Shah Rukh Khan’s last successful film would be Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express (2013). Post which [Happy New Year (2014), Dilwale (2015), Fan (2016), Raees & Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) & Zero (2018)] it seems he hasn’t got the right script or a storyteller to encash his acting prowess (read star power). Would it be safe to say that the actor in him is urging him to look for great stories? But then why stoop to levels that do not match your persona.

Dear Shah Rukh, have you ever thought about your millions of fans who feel so let down after watching your videos promoting OTT platforms belittling you? Why be part of campaigns where you have to say that you are no more important!! You are any ways producing content through your production house, and are doing other businesses too, so, obviously money cannot be the factor.

In the recent past SRK has been part of quite a few promotional videos which, for whatever reason, has shown him in a desperate situation or lesser than others. No harm in being a sport and give due credit to others but the fans may be feeling the heat. His video campaign for an OTT platform and now a video announcing his collaboration with Raj Kumar Hirani.

Though it comes as a great news for SRKians to see him join hands with one of the greatest story tellers in Hindi cinema, but then SRK is not a newbie to feel astonished looking at the posters of PK, Sanju, Munnabhai, et al. Shah Rukh Khan is a brand and not for nothing. Why would good directors be not eager or willing to work with you! It is for people/artist who do not get work or are unknown who visit various storytellers to present them, not a SRK of course.

Sample this… the video begins with Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) checking on the posters of some of Rajkumar Hirani’s iconic films – Munnabhai MBBS, 3 Idiots, PK, Sanju… à la a newbie getting mesmerised after stepping into a popular production house! SRK, then, with a very bemused expression, quizzes Rajkumar Hirani if he has any script for him too!! Read on…

Shah Rukh Khan (SRK): Wah… films (with an astonished look)

Raj Kumar Hirani (RKH): Kya dekh rahe ho Shah Rukh? (even RKH is surprised)

SRK: Kuch nahin sir bas ye… Ranbir Kapoor has Sanju… Aamir has PK… Sanju baba ofcourse has Munnabhai MBBS…  wah sir wah, kamal hai sir… mere liye bhi kuch aisa hai kya!!?? (an bemused SRK, probably keeping his fingers crossed, makes a point to RKH)

RKH: Sir, ek hai script mere paas…

SRK: Really… Comedy hai?

RKH: Bahut hai

SRK: Emotion hai?

RKH: Woh bhi hai!

SRK:  Romance hai sir? (with is iconic arms spread pose)

RKH: Hai sir, par yeh wala action-na avoid kariyega. (probably meaning, you are done with this… move on)

SRK: Aah arre, haath hi kaat lunga main sir aap bolo toh (sadly, he is so desperate that he is ready to chop off his hands just to work with RKH)

SRK: Naam kya hai sir??!!

RKH: DUNKI

SRK: Donkey??!! (surprising, SRK is a very well read person, can he not differentiate the pronunciation? and calling donkey?)

RKH: Donkey nahin Shah Rukh DUNKI

SRK: Main samjha ‘donkey’ DUNKI DUNKI!! in and as… (what donkey?)

SRK: matlab… dunki??!!!

SRK: Pata nahin kya bana raha hai yeh… jo bhi hai le lo le lo!!! (this is the last straw… why show that you ‘want to’ accept anything no matter what, whether you understood or not!!)

If one analyses the narrative of the video, Shah Rukh Khan is shown in a very desperate position.

Sample this… SRK steps in RKH’s office like a newcomer impressed seeing the best of the films made for various actors. So? even SRK has great films to his credit and has worked with equally good directors too. Why is an SRK shown to be less confident and sort of asks in a pleading tone. As much an actor requires a good director vice-versa even a good director needs good actors to say his story, then why stick to ‘donkey’, for God sake!

And if that was not enough, you have stooped to the lowest level that even though you aren’t sure what the other guy is talking about and has walked away, you are telling yourself to ‘grab whatever is coming your way’!! I mean, that could be a story of someone who hasn’t done any film and has gotten a chance to meet a great storyteller like Rajkumar Hirani and feels blessed to be part of anything that he makes. It is like a Nawazuddin Siddiqui getting a minuscule role in a John Matthew Matthan’s Sarfarosh (1999), when he was a no one!!

Even if the idea of the video was to showcase that SRK, after 3 decades of ruling Bollywood is still so humble and low lying to accept anything that comes his way, cannot be digested. The director walking away leaving you alone and not responding looks unconvincing too.

Fortunately, SRK gets an affirmative response but with a caveat, which clearly hints that SRK needs to meander with his acting histrionics and bring in something different & fresh. The biggest takeaway is that when he hears the film’s title, he assumes that he is sarcastically belittled.

So much so that he feels that even if it is that than he has but no choice! And he finally surrenders telling himself to pick up whatever it is, even though he is not sure what the director is upto! (Obviously Hirani is not someone to dish out anything)

Finally dear Shah Rukh Khan, we are more than sure and vouch for two greatest artists to join hands and entertain us but would have expected a better announcement video and wait for yet another SRK film to catch up to. Until then we keep our faith in – agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho, to puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai
